The most taciturn member of the Apple Family. Big McIntosh can often be spotted gnawing on a wheat sprig with a look of content or indifference. He has little to add to most conversations beyond his signature "EeeeyyUP." He never yells; he doesn't emote. A thoughtful and quiet pony, he is a sharp contrast to Applejack and most of his family that have recurred thus far.
Big McIntosh was introduced in the first episode and spoke for the first time in episode four. He makes numerous cameo appearances throughout the first season with little dialogue. In episode 23: The Cutie Mark Chronicles it is revealed he received his cutie mark at a young age before Applejack embarked on a journey to discover her own.
Big McIntosh is a red Earth Pony with an orange mane and tail, with yellowish hooves and green eyes. His eyes are almost always half closed and he looks slightly bored all the time. He also has a girdle around his neck area.
Also as Filly nothing really changes, except he does not have freckles on his cheeks.
It is not said how he got his cutie mark, but it was probably realizing that he wanted to work on the farm, like Applejack did.
Big McIntosh is calm and easy-going, which is way different than Applejack, who has a stubborn attitude. His appearance matches his personality too, as said in "appearance" his eyes are half closed and he looks slightly bored all the time, and he accepts everything that happens around him.
Big McIntosh rarely says anything more than a few words, but like the rest of the Apple Family he speaks with an accent, which is suggested to be a Missouri Ozarks accent, where lots of apple orchards were found.
His laid-back appearance is matched with him speaking calmly and rather slowly, he never raises his voice either. He also has a practical sense of wisdom, greater than Applejack's who doesn't like when he talks this way. But he never really shares his opinions much, he instead just answeres with "eeyup". Lastly, Big McIntosh can almost always be seen with a sprig of wheat hanging out of the side of his mouth.
Big McIntosh lives with Granny Smith and with his little sisters Apple Bloom and Applejack at Sweet Apple Acres. Being the only stallion residing on the farm, he does much of the difficult manual labor, including plowing the fields.
